01 — The trip

Planned unhurried.

The Rongai route starts on Mount Kilimanjaro ‘s northeastern side near the Kenyan border. Its remote location means it’s less crowded than other routes, offering a pristine wilderness experience. It’s flatter but lacks the advantage of high-altitude acclimatization. Typically a 6-day trek (recommended for acclimatization), covering 74.5 km, it shares the summit path with the Marangu route. The Rongai ascends from the north and descends via the Marangu on the southeast, offering remoteness and less traffic. Mega Adventures suggests it for lessexperienced climbers seeking a quieter hike. Main difference between 6 and 7 days Rongai route: The 7-day version includes an acclimatization day at Mawenzi Tarn hut. Day 1: Arrival
