Zanzibar works on its own, and it works as the last five nights of a safari or a climb. One night in Stone Town, the rest on the coast, and a fixed price when it is added to a trip you have already booked with us.
per person
Booked on its own rather than as an add-on, Zanzibar is quoted per trip — the flights and the number of nights change the figure. Activities are arranged separately and are not in the $590.
Stone Town first, while you still have the energy for it, then the coast. Jambiani is the default and the quietest; Nungwi and Kendwa are busier with better swimming at low tide; Matemwe looks across at Mnemba. These are the places we book.
The first beachfront hotel inside the UNESCO old town, open since 1994. Breakfast, airport transfer, air conditioning and WiFi included.
The east coast, and where the four nights are unless you ask otherwise. Long tidal flats, kite-surfing at Paje, very little noise.
The north tip, where the tide barely goes out, so you can swim at any hour. Closest to Mnemba Atoll for diving. Available for a supplement.
North-east, facing Mnemba, and the quietest of the three coasts. Circular seafront rooms with ocean balconies. Available for a supplement.
None of this is compulsory and none of it is in the $590 — tell us which you want and we will price and book them around your dates.
The old town, its architecture and the spice market, with a guide who explains the difficult parts of its history rather than skipping them.
The rooftop in Stone Town: drinks at six, a three-course meal, live music, and the sun going down over the roofs.
A day under sail on a dhow to one of the better reefs, then a barbecue on a sandbank.
Zanzibar’s only national park, and the red colobus monkey, which lives nowhere else on earth.
Through the mangrove channels by SUP or canoe. No experience needed.
A boat over, then an ox-cart tour with Abdullah, lunch with his family, and a wooden canoe back through the mangroves.
Red mud houses, banana plantations and coconut rope-making, on foot or by bicycle.
Drinks, fruit and snacks on the water, with a beach barbecue if you want one.
A Jambiani restaurant built from coconut trees, cooking what it sources locally that day.
Vanilla, cardamom, cinnamon and ginger on the plantation, with lunch.
April is the wettest month by a distance and August the driest. The island is a malaria area, unlike the highlands you will have come from — worth raising with your doctor before you travel.
Send your safari or climb dates and how many of you there are, and we will come back with the Zanzibar leg costed against them — including which coast suits the tide and the time of year you are travelling.
No deposit and no obligation — we reply with a suggested route, the lodges at your tier and the real per-person price. We do not pass your details to anyone else.
